The future of ODI cricket is in danger! Bilateral series after 2027 is unlikely
The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) is understood to have given important advice to the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding ODI cricket. ICC should stop bilateral ODI series after 2027 ODI World Cup with MCC. This advice was given by the MCC to the ICC during the recently concluded Lord’s Test between England and Australia. However, MCC also feels that the popularity of ODI cricket may increase after World Cup 2023.
As the MCC has said, Test cricket has its challenges. There are many countries in the world, which cannot afford a five-day match. He also gave the example of Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwe team had decided in 2017 that they would play as many matches as possible abroad, i.e. in the host country of the opposition. Against this backdrop, the MCC also suggested that the ICC should provide a separate fund for Test matches.
A big decision on the future of ODI cricket is likely to be taken soon. The fan base of ODI cricket has seen a rapid decline over the past few years. It has been seen that this fan base is divided between T20 and Test cricket. ODI cricket has been hit especially after the Corona epidemic. One cannot rule out the possibility that ODI cricket will face problems with broadcasters in the near future.
According to media reports, the ICC meeting will be held in Durban, South Africa in the near future, in which important decisions regarding ODI cricket may be taken. ICC sources have been quoted as saying that ODI World Cup 2023 and Champions Trophy 2025 are close. But still fans do not seem enthusiastic about ODI cricket. Especially after Corona, fans have not shown enthusiasm towards ODI format due to T20 cricket. However, in a country like India, the ODI World Cup and the Champions Trophy can attract huge crowds of fans. This crowd was important to save ODI cricket, said this source.
On the other hand, according to ICC, broadcasters are now focusing on Test and T20 series. Broadcasters don’t seem too keen on ODI cricket. In this case, the future of ODI cricket can be decided at the ICC meeting in Durban. (The future of ODI cricket is in danger! Bilateral series after 2027 is unlikely)
