The ongoing ODI World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe concluded the first round of matches on Monday (June 26). In the final match of the first round, the hosts Zimbabwe qualified for the Super Six with a whopping 304-run win over the USA. It became the second biggest win in ODI history.
In this match played in Harare, Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat first. He batted a storm against the US team, which was considered to be somewhat weak. The duo of Kaya and Gumbi gave them a half-century. Gumby scored 78 runs. Veteran Sean Williams, who came in to bat at number two, made a whirlwind knock of 174 runs off just 101 balls. All-rounder Sikandar Raza, who has shone throughout the tournament, also contributed 48 runs. Ryan Burl who came next scored 47 runs in just 16 balls. Thanks to all these contributions, the team reached 408. This became the highest ODI score in Zimbabwean cricket history.
While chasing this score, the US team did not appear anywhere in the competition. Only three of their batsmen could score a half-century. Abhishek Paradkar contributed the most for USA with 24 runs. The US innings ended on just 104 runs with all the bowlers claiming wickets for Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe became the only team to win all four matches in the first round of the qualifiers. After that, they will play three more matches in the Super Six round. The top two teams in the Super Six round will qualify for the World Cup in India.
