Lucknow Super Giants won by 5 runs against Mumbai Indians on Tuesday (May 16). After this victory, Lucknow team reached the third position in the points table, while Mumbai had to fall to the fourth position. Mumbai’s loss in this match has made the playoff race even more exciting. Gujarat Titans have become the first team to reach the playoffs of IPL 2023. Now a total of 6 teams are going to fight each other for the remaining three seats.
Such is the playoff equation
Lucknow Super Giants have 15 points after this win. Their next match is against Kolkata Knight Riders. If Lucknow wins the next match, they will have 17 points and qualify for the playoffs. Chennai Super Kings currently have 15 points and CSK has to play their last match in the league stage on May 20. If Chennai beat Delhi in this match, the team will qualify for the playoffs with 17 points.
Mumbai Indians are fourth with 14 points. Sunrisers Hyderabad will face Mumbai in the next match. If Mumbai wins against Hyderabad, the team will have a total of 16 points and the matter may come down to net run rate. Because apart from Mumbai, RCB and Punjab Kings also have a chance to get 16 points. RCB and Punjab still have two matches to play each. If these two teams win both these matches, the team with the best net run rate between Mumbai, RCB and Punjab can get a chance in the playoffs.
On the other hand, Rajasthan and Kolkata have to play one match each. Both teams can reach a maximum of 14 points. The odds of the fourth team in the playoffs being picked with 14 points are slim to none. However, the hope of both these teams still remains.
