Legendary former captain Kapil Dev got the honor of playing the first match of an ICC tournament. Under his leadership, India played its first World Cup in 1983. India won the World Cup by 43 runs. After that, India had to wait for 17 years to play the final match of the ICC tournament. India played the 2000 Champions Trophy final under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly. However, in this match, New Zealand shocked India by 4 wickets.

Two years later, in 2002, under the leadership of Ganguly, India again played the Champions Trophy final. India and Sri Lanka were declared joint winners as the match was interrupted by rain. After this tournament, in the next year i.e. 2003, India again played the final of the ODI World Cup under the leadership of Ganguly. In this match, Australia defeated the Indian team by 125 runs.

India won the first T20 World Cup under the leadership of Dhoni
After Ganguly, MS Dhoni got the honor of playing the final match of the ICC tournament. Dhoni led India to the final of the first-ever T20 World Cup in 2007. Not only this, India won the first ICC T20 trophy by defeating Pakistan by 5 runs. After that, India played the final match of the 2011 ODI World Cup under the leadership of Dhoni. In this match too, India won the second ODI World Cup defeating Sri Lanka by 6 wickets. This was Dhoni’s second World Cup. After that, India also played the final of the 2013 Champions Trophy under Dhoni’s leadership. In this match, India defeated England by 5 runs and won the title. After Dhoni, India got a captain in the form of Virat Kohli. India played the 2017 Champions Trophy final under the leadership of Virat Kohli. In this match, Pakistan won by defeating India by a margin of 180 runs. After that, under the leadership of Virat, India played the final match of the 2021 World Test Championship Tournament. In this match, New Zealand won the trophy by defeating India by 8 wickets.
