Sunil Gavaskar feels that the biggest challenge for the Indian team players in the WTC Final will be to get out of the IPL T20 cricket format. The Indian team led by Rohit Sharma will play the WTC final at England’s ‘K Oval’ from June 7. Most of the players playing in this have reached the IPL 2023 tournament.

Speaking to Star Sports on Tuesday (May 30), Gavaskar said, “The biggest test will be that everyone will come from playing T20 format of cricket and Test cricket is a long format. So I think it’s going to be a big challenge. Among all Indian players, only veteran batsman Cheteshwar Pujara has played in the longest format. Because, he is playing county cricket.”

Speaking further, Gavaskar said, “India only has Cheteshwar Pujara playing in the English County Cricket Championship, so he will be the only player, who has been playing in this format for a long time. So it’s going to be a big challenge for them.”

Ajinkya Rahane also made a strong comeback in the IPL after a long spell of poor form and helped Chennai Super Kings win their fifth IPL title. Talking about him, Gavaskar said, “This 34-year-old player’s experience in England conditions will be beneficial for the team. He has a lot of experience playing in England, he has scored a lot of runs in England. So I think he will be an important player at number five. I also believe that he wants to prove himself. I still think he can play a lot of cricket and this is a great opportunity for him.”

Rahane has scored 326 runs at an average of 32.60 in 14 matches for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2023 season. He has also scored 2 half-centuries during this run.
