U Mumba TT team gets off to a winning start in Ultimate Table Tennis Season 4

Pune, July 14, 2023 : U Mumba TT team made a winning start in the ongoing Ultimate Table Tennis Season 4 at Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Mahalunge-Balewadi, Pune. U Mumba beat Bangalore Smashers in a head-to-head match.

Promoted by Niraj Bajaj and Vita Dani in association with the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI), the franchise-based league has been a game changer for Indian table tennis since its inception in 2017. The fourth season will also try to achieve that. U Mumba defeated Bangalore Smashers by a 10-5 margin to clinch the Ultimate Table Tennis Season 4 tie, sponsored by DafaNews for the defending champions.

In the men’s singles opener, world number 58 Kirill Gerasimenko posted a shock 2-1 win over world number 18 Kadri Aruna. With this win, Bangalore Smashers got two important points. The Bangalore player got off to a positive start and hit some fine shots to seal a thrilling 11-3, 9-11, 11-8 win.

In the women’s singles, veteran Manika Batra defeated Dia Chitale by a 2-1 margin to take Bangalore Smashers’ lead to 4-2. Manika, ranked 35th in the world, won 11-10, 7-11, 11-6 with an aggressive game. The U Mumba TT team made a comeback in the mixed doubles match. Manav Thakkar and Lily Zhang defeated Manika Va Kirill 2-1 (11-10, 10-11, 11-6) to reduce Bangalore’s lead to 5-4.

Manav continued his strong form to win his fourth match with a win over Sanil Shetty in men’s singles. He scored a resounding 3-0 (11-8, 11-3, 11-7) win over Sunil to give U Mumba TT a 7-5 lead. In the final match, Lily Zhang easily defeated Bangalore’s Natalia Bajor 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-4) to confirm U Mumba’s victory.
