Umpire can’t control Dhoni! Australian legend upset with CSK skipper’s strategy
The qualifier between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans turned out to be an exciting match. CSK won the match by 15 runs at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday (May 23). CSK has become the first team to reach the final in IPL 2023. However, one act of CSK captain MS Dhoni in the qualifier match is causing controversy. Former Australian team legend Brad Hogg also expressed his displeasure with Dhoni’s act.
Chennai batted first in this match after losing the toss. CSK scored 172 for 7 in 20 overs. In reply, Gujarat Titans managed to reach 157 runs in 20 overs. The 16th over of Gujarat’s innings remained controversial. Because the umpire was not allowing Mathisha Pathirana to bowl. As per the rule, Pathirana could bowl only after he had spent as much time on the field as he was off the field. Dhoni stopped the match for 4 minutes. It cannot be said that this match was stopped because of the dispute with the umpires. Because this was Dhoni’s strategy, which worked for CSK.
Dhoni wanted Mathisha Pathirana to bowl as the 16th over was crucial for CSK. Pathirana was off the field for more than 8 minutes before this over. In that case, if he wanted to bowl, he would get a chance directly in the 17th over. However, Dhoni cleverly discussed the umpires for four minutes to fill the time. After this the umpires also allowed Pathirana to bowl. However, according to former Australian legend Broad Hogg, Dhoni’s strategy was not the right one.
Hogg expressed his displeasure on Wednesday (May 24) via his official social media account. He tweeted, “Dhoni took full advantage of his absence. He kept the umpires stuck with him for four minutes. So that Pathirana can bowl. The umpires should have handled the situation at such a time. However, they do not have these floors. The umpire was seen laughing with Dhoni, which was not expected.”
Overall, Rituraj Gaikwad was the match winner for CSK once again. He scored a record 60 off 44 balls, for which he was also awarded the man of the match award. Shubman Gill top scored for Gujarat with 42 runs. Deepak Chahar, Mahisha Thikshana, Ravindra Jadeja and Mathisha Pathirana took two wickets each. Tushar Deshpande also got a wicket. As for Gujarat’s bowling attack, Mohammad Shami and Mohit Sharma took two wickets each. Darshan Nalkande, Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmed took one wicket each.
