Former captain of Indian cricket team MS Dhoni is now in the last phase of his career. After retiring from international cricket four years ago, he is currently only seen playing in the IPL. Under his leadership, the Indian team won all the ICC tournaments in their name. Dilip Vengsarkar, the former chairman of the selection committee, who first appointed Dhoni as the captain of the Indian team, has now revealed the reason why Dhoni was made the captain of the Indian team.

With no leadership experience, Dhoni was appointed as the captain of the Indian team in the 2007 T20 World Cup. After all the senior players withdrew from this World Cup, the responsibility came to Dhoni. Under his leadership, the Indian team lifted this World Cup with a historic performance. Speaking about the events that happened at that time, Vengsarkar said,

“Looking at Dhoni, we always saw leadership qualities in him. His demeanor on the field, the way he talks to other players in the team, his ability to step up and take responsibility, his ability to carry everyone along and his understanding of the game were all in his favour. When Sachin Tendulkar suggested Dhoni’s name to us as the captain before the World Cup, no one could oppose his name.”

Dhoni led the Indian team for almost ten years. Under his leadership, the Indian team won the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy. Apart from that, the performance of taking the Indian team to the top position in the Test ranking for the first time was also done under his leadership. Under his leadership, Chennai Super Kings have won the IPL five times and the Champions League twice.
