Veteran women’s player retires while still playing in WPL, teammates get emotional
South Africa captain and legendary all-rounder Dane van Niekerk has decided to retire from international cricket. Van Niekerk is currently part of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Women’s Premier League in India. Although Niekerk did not directly announce his retirement from international cricket, he made three official announcements soon after. Due to a post she shared on social media, talks have started that the three will retire soon.
Dane van Niekerk shared the story from his official Instagram account, with a special message. The Instagram story reads, “Even though some chapters in our lives are not over, we have to accept that they are. If what is already broken, there is no point in trying to fix it.” Van Nickers made no mention of retirement in the post. But fellow player Marizanne Kapp shared a special post with the caption, “End of an era.” Cape’s post includes comments from former team captain Van Niekerk. Nikark also shared this post on his official social media.

Last month, the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup was held in South Africa. Nikark, however, was not part of the South African team in this important tournament played at home. The exclusion of Niekerk from the team also sparked a good deal of controversy. In her absence, Sune Luus led the South African team. Under the leadership of Luce, the African team reached the final but was beaten by Australia. Cricket South Africa also announced Luce as their regular captain of the team.
According to information, Niekerk did not prove himself in the fitness test before the T20 World Cup. She failed the test due to a gap of just 18 seconds. Niekerk played her last international match in September 2021. He was then dropped from the team due to an ankle injury. After a long time, it was said that Nikark will make a comeback in the tri-series in the country in the month of January this year. But due to fitness reasons, she could not make a comeback to the team. Further, her name has also been dropped from the T20 World Cup.
Nickreck’s international career includes one Test, 107 ODIs and 86 T20 Internationals for the African women’s team. In these matches she has scored 22, 2175, 1877 runs respectively. She has taken 1, 138 and 65 wickets in these three formats.
