The third Test match of the Ashes 2023 series was played at the Headingley ground in Leeds. In this match, the England team made a strong comeback in the series by winning on the fourth day itself. With this win, England maintained their challenge in the series. The series is now 2-1 in Australia’s favor after three matches. England all-rounder Chris Woakes, playing for the first time in this series, played the lion’s share in England’s victory.
England were challenged to 251 runs for victory in the last innings of this match. England batted brilliantly while chasing these runs. However, Australia’s veteran fast bowler Mitchell Starc kept Australia’s hopes alive by dismissing Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow. At the same time, Woakes, who came to bat at number eight, remained unbeaten till the end while facing the Australian bowlers and scored 32 runs off 47 balls.
Woakes, who was not part of the squad for the first two Tests, made his comeback from this match. He had shown the way to the tent for three batsmen in Australia’s first innings. Then he scored 10 runs while batting in England’s first innings. Then while bowling in the second innings, Usman Khawaja, first innings centurion Mitchell Marsh and Alex Carey were shown the way to the tent. After that, he played the lion’s share in the team’s victory by going unbeaten in the final match.
Woakes has not been a part of England’s Test squad for some time now. He got a chance in this match in place of veteran James Anderson who played in the first two matches. He once again retained his place in the team with this match-winning performance.
