Although the Indian team has won two consecutive Test series against Australia, vice-captain KL Rahul’s form has become a concern for India. Rahul scored only 18 runs in both innings of the second Test match. Also, he failed in the Nagpur Test. After this, there is a demand to remove him from the team. However, the team’s head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma decided to give him more opportunities.
In the second Test match played in Delhi, the Indian team defeated Australia by 6 wickets. With this win, the Indian team took a 2-0 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series. In this match which was played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, the Indian team had to overcome the challenge of 115 runs to win. India met this challenge before the tee break on the third day and won the second match of the series.
Rahul has been criticized for his continued poor form. However, the captain and head coach seem to be supporting him. Speaking after the second match, Dravid said,
“I think he should be trusted. He has always performed strongly for the team abroad. This is a bad time that will pass. He certainly has that qualification.”
On the other hand, captain Rohit said,
“Rahul’s performance has been continuously discussed for some days now. However, he will soon put up a brilliant innings. The team management and the players have full confidence in his abilities.”
KL Rahul has scored just 175 runs in 11 Test innings since the start of 2022. Meanwhile, his average has been 15.90. He led the side in the absence of Rohit Sharma in the two-Test series against Bangladesh. Despite playing a total of 47 matches, his Test average is just 33.44.
