Why did Gavaskar play without a helmet against dangerous fast bowlers? ‘This’ was the reason
July is a very special month for Indian cricket lovers. The reason behind this is that the Indian sports legend has his birthday in this month. It includes players like MS Dhoni (07), Sourav Ganguly (08) and Sunil Gavaskar (10). Dhoni and Ganguly celebrated their birthdays recently. Now Sunil Gavaskar is celebrating his 74th birthday. Gavaskar is counted among the legendary opening batsmen of the world. Gavaskar holds the longest record in Tests. He is the first cricketer to score 10000 runs in Tests. He achieved this milestone against Pakistan in Ahmedabad in March 1987. On the occasion of Gavaskar’s birthday, let us know something special about him…
Batting without a helmet
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar faced more than one deadly fast bowler during his cricketing career (1971-87). Also, Khora scored runs against them. He bravely played helmetless against fast bowlers like West Indies’ Malcolm Marshall, Griffith, Andy Roberts, England’s Ian Botham, New Zealand’s Richard Hadley, Australia’s Dennis Lillee and Pakistan’s Imran Khan. He was the only batsman of his generation, who never wore a full helmet.
Reasons for not wearing a helmet
There was a reason why Gavaskar did not wear a helmet. He has often mentioned this in his interviews. Gavaskar had said in an interview in 2009 that he has a habit of reading before going to bed at night. Mostly they used to sleep while reading. As a result, their neck muscles were weakened and they were afraid that if they played with a helmet, they would not be able to bounce the ball.
Self made head shell
However, there was a time when he was seen wearing a protective headgear. A fast ball from West Indies fast bowler Malcolm Marshall hit him on the head. After that, Gavaskar himself prepared a protective cover for his head. He played the last few years of his cricket career wearing this cover.
Test career of Gavaskar
Talking about Gavaskar’s Test career, he has scored 10122 runs in 214 innings in 125 Test matches at an average of 51.12. He has scored 34 centuries and 45 fifties during this run. Interestingly, he has scored 4 double centuries in Tests. His best score in Tests remains 236 not out. (legend cricketer sunil gavaskar never use helmet during playing cricket match know why)
