Will Australia win the third test? The captaincy again came to Steve Smith
The Border Gavaskar Test series between India and Australia is currently being played. Hosts India defeated Australia in the first two matches of the series and took a 2-0 lead in the series. After accepting defeat in two consecutive matches, Australian captain Pat Cummins decided to return home citing personal reasons. With Cummins not due to return to India before the third Test, Steve Smith will once again be seen leading Australia at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
Pat Cummins became the new captain of the team after Tim Paine was removed as Australia’s Test captain last year. He performed well both individually and as a team captain in the meantime. But in the first tour of India of the year, the Australian team under the leadership of Cummins was seen to have surrendered. The first match of this year’s Border Gavaskar Trophy was played at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur. India won the match by an innings and 132 runs. The second match was played in Delhi and Australia lost by 6 wickets in this match.
Australia will have to perform well in the next two matches to save the team’s shame after two consecutive defeats. But even before that, the team got a shock in the form of Cummins. Cummins has returned home due to his mother’s ill health. He was expected to return to the team before the third Test to be played in Indore. But the team needed a new captain for the upcoming match after being informed by Cummins that “I have decided not to return to India for now.” In this case, Steve Smith is the best option to carry out the responsibility. Steve Smith will be seen playing as captain in India after a long time.
Smith has vast experience of leading the Australian team. He served as the team’s regular captain between 2014 and 2018. During this time, he led the Australian team in a total of 34 Tests, one against the West Indies in December last year and one in the Ashes series in 2021. Thus, the total number of Test matches played by Australia under his leadership is 36. Out of these matches, Australia has won 20 matches and lost 10 matches. The remaining 6 matches have been drawn.
On the other hand, Cummins has led the team in 15 Test matches since taking over the Test captaincy of Australia. Out of these matches, Australians have won 8 and lost 3 matches. The remaining four matches were drawn. Cummins, who withdrew from the third Test, has not yet received any concrete information about whether he will play in the fourth Test or not.
