Wrestlers’ protest to BCCI! Notice received in ‘this’ case, read in detail
There has been an uproar after veteran wrestlers of the country started a protest against the President of the Wrestling Federation of India, Brijbhushan Singh, accusing him of sexual harassment. Apart from Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, Commonwealth champion Vinesh Phogat has been adamant in demanding Brijbhushan’s arrest. Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission has asked a total of 15 federations apart from the Sports Ministry, SAI, Wrestling Federation and Board of Control for Cricket in India. Notice has been issued. It is said that these federations do not have an internal grievance committee.
Although all eyes are mainly on the wrestling federation due to the wrestlers’ agitation, it has also brought to light the shortcomings of various sports federations running in the country. The Prevention of Sexual Exploitation Act, 2013 makes it mandatory for all types of institutions, companies and offices to have an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC). Failure to do so will be considered a violation of law.
At present, 15 out of 30 sports federations in India either do not have an ICC or even the existing federations do not fully follow the rules.
Now the NHRC has issued notices to these 16 federations citing this report and sought their replies. Apart from the wrestling federation, it includes federations like badminton, volleyball, table tennis, archery, basketball. Not only these sports organizations but the NHRC’s notice has also gone to the Union Sports Ministry, Sports Authority of India (SAI).
Not only this, this notice has also been sent to the Board of Control for Cricket in India i.e. BCCI, which runs cricket in the country. Due to which BCCI has also come under investigation. The Commission has asked all of them to reply to the notice within the next 4 weeks.
Two years ago, former BCCI CEO Rahul Johri was accused of sexual harassment. These allegations were before he became the CEO of BCCI. The BCCI then formed a three-member inquiry committee. He was acquitted of this charge at the end of the investigation.
