“You are playing for yourself, cricket will teach you a lesson”, fumed Veeru after Gill’s slow innings

After a strong performance by the bowlers, Shubman Gill’s half-century saw Gujarat win the match by 6 wickets. Former India opener Virender Sehwag has criticized Gill as he played a key role in Gujarat’s victory.

Chasing 154 runs for victory, Gujarat won in the last over. Gill, the opener, was dismissed in the last over. He scored 67 off 49 balls. Sehwag criticized him for his slow innings. Sehwag said,

“Gill scored 67 off 49 balls. However, he took only 41-42 balls to complete his half-century. He quickly scored a half-century. Had he not done that, Gujarat would have been 16-17 runs away from the last over.”

Sehwag added,

“He should not play for personal records. The team should play the way it needs to. You can’t think, I make my half-century and we win the match anyway. When you think like that, you get punished by cricket.”

As Sehwag said, Gill played somewhat aggressively in the power play. However, his strike rate decreased after that. After a half century, he again played aggressively and took the team close to victory. However, when the team was close to victory, he was bowled in the last over.
